Newfoundland
Dunhill Rural Enterprises Ltd. aim to sustain very close links with Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada by networking and collaborating with Community Organisations; Local Businesses; Academic Institutions and Statutory Bodies; and subsequently explore synergies and promote entrepreneurial opportunities between the various entities.
Grass Roots Tourism is currently spearheading a Heritage and Cultural project entitled Newfoundland: Talamh an Éisc Emigrant Trail funded by Executive Director Agnes Aylward, Ireland Newfoundland Partnership in association with the Department of the Taoiseach. The objectives of this project are two-fold: firstly to promote further connections between Ireland and Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada and secondly to promote our shared heritage and cultural links as a platform for developing sustainable rural tourism in communities of the Southeast.
INP funded Dunhill Ecopark Heritage and Tourism R & D Manager a Research Trip to Newfoundland in March 2008 to work with Professor John Mannion a retired academic of Memorial University, St.Johns, Newfoundland [http://www.mun.ca/] and develop relationships with communities by undertaking a public consultation process in Newfoundland communicating the Emigrant Trail project in the Southeast of Ireland.

Outputs of Research included the following:
- Development of Newfoundland: Talamh an Éisc Emigrant Trail project components
- Permission to use Professor Mannion’s geographic map illustrating where emigrant/migrant concentrations emanated from villages and towns in the Southeast from the period 1700 to 1840s.
- Navigation and Walking were the primary modes of transport during that era and it was advocated that a Newfoundland Emigrant Walking Trail should be incorporated as a project component.
- Professor Mannion suggested using road maps pertaining to that era e.g. Charles Smith 1746; Taylor and Skinner 1775 and OSI 1836.This would add to the authenticity of the project.
- Acknowledgement made to Jack Burtchaell’s work entitled: The Geography of Déise Surnames, DECIES No.50 the Journal of the Old Waterford Society. Suggestion to incorporate Déise Map of Surnames into the project. This will enhance the essence of the project linking Surnames/Genealogy with Geography.
